For this repair, the LCD was badly damaged, causing a funky black and white image to appear on the display. The glass overlay, however, was fine. On non-Retina MacBook Pros like this one, it is possible to replace the LCD and glass separately. For a 13 inch model the cost was only $195.
And the display looks good as new!
